Published low and high for each part. Real jobs rarely land at both extremes at once.
Footings, stairs, fasteners and wood railing aren’t priced in these sources. Hidden fasteners add $1 to $2 a sq ft, and composite often needs closer joists, another $1 to $3 a sq ft (Decks.com).
The ranges come from Decks.com, which Trex, a composite decking maker, owns. They’re national; local labor and lumber prices move them a lot. Two or three quotes will tell you where you land.
How we work it out
We price each part of the job from published per-square-foot ranges, then add railing, a permit and taking out an old deck.
deck = sq ft × (decking + framing + labor) + railing ft × railing + permit + removal
Decking runs from $3 to $6 a sq ft for pressure-treated wood up to $15 to $20 for aluminum. Framing lumber and hardware add $9 to $13, and a contractor's labor $8 to $22. Railing is $25 to $100 or more a foot. These all come from Decks.com, which Trex owns, because it's the only current source we found that splits a deck into parts. For composite we also show Remodeling magazine's 2025 Cost vs. Value figure as a cross-check.
Footings, stairs and wood railing aren't priced in these sources, so budget for them on top, and get local quotes.
