What does a heated driveway cost to run?

Put in the heated area, how many snowfalls you get and your state. You’ll get the cost an hour, a storm and a winter, and what it costs to put in.

$393 a winter

15 storms of 6 hours, at 18.2¢ a kWh. That's $26.19 a storm, or $4.37 an hour while it runs.

kW = 480 sq ft × 50 W ÷ 1,000 = 24

per hour = 24 kW × 18.2¢ = $4.37

winter = $4.37 × 6 h × 15 storms = $393

Putting it in

Published installed prices run $12 to $30 a sq ft with the surface: about $5,760 to $14,400 here.

Power

24 kW is about 100 A at 240 V (watts ÷ volts). An electrician sizes the circuits and checks the panel can carry it.

Sensor

A snow sensor that turns it on and off keeps the hours near the storm. Run it all winter and the cost multiplies.

How we work it out

kW = sq ft × watts per sq ft ÷ 1,000 · cost = kW × hours × price per kWh

Electric snow-melt mats draw 37 to 50 W a sq ft: Warmzone's residential ClearZone is 37, Watts' ProMelt mat 38 at 120 V and 50 at 240 V, and WarmlyYours says systems "typically operate at 50 watts per square foot". WarmlyYours puts an average snowfall at 6 hours, counting 3 hours after it stops, so we use 6 when you leave it blank.

The price is your state's average home electricity price from the EIA, or your own. Installed, heated driveways run $12 to $30 a sq ft with the surface (Bob Vila, LawnStarter). Hydronic systems burn gas or oil instead, which this doesn't price.
