Asphalt calculator: how many tons?

Measure the driveway and put in the thickness from your quote. You'll get the tons, which is how plants and pavers price it.

area = 50 ft × 12 ft = 600 sq ft

volume = 600 sq ft × 3 in ÷ 12 = 150 cu ft

weight = 150 cu ft × 145 lb = 21750 lb

tons = 21750 ÷ 2000 = 10.9

Thickness

Put in the compacted thickness, the number on your quote. Loose asphalt off the truck rolls down thinner.

Weight

We used 145 lb a cubic foot, the number state DOTs use for hot mix. Your plant's mix can run a little either way.

Quotes

Pavers price by the ton or the square yard. Ask which, so you can check the quote against these numbers.

How we work it out

Hot mix asphalt weighs about 145 lb a cubic foot once it's rolled. That's the number state DOTs use to estimate jobs.

cubic feet = square feet × thickness in inches ÷ 12

tons = cubic feet × 145 ÷ 2,000

Some pavers use 110 lb per square yard per inch instead. It's the same math, rounded. We don't pick a thickness for you. That depends on your base and what drives on it, so it's the paver's call.
