Pool volume calculator: how many gallons?
Measure the length, width and water depth at each end. You'll get the gallons, which is the number every chemical label doses by.
Updated · How we check our numbers
Your pool holds
18,193 gallons
That's 68,859 liters over 512 sq ft of surface, about 1.8 times the 10,000 gallons chemical labels dose for.

What a pool this size costsIn-ground, from four published price guides
surface = 32 ft × 16 ft = 512 sq ft
average depth = (3.5 + 6) ÷ 2 = 4.75 ft
gallons = 512 sq ft × 4.75 ft × 7.48 = 18,193 gal
liters = 18,193 × 3.785 = 68,859 L
weight = 18,193 × 8.34 lb ÷ 2,000 = 75.9 tons
Measure from the waterline to the floor, not the top of the wall. Above-ground pools usually sit a few inches below the rim.
Averaging the two ends assumes the floor slopes evenly. A pool with a long flat shallow end and a short deep hopper holds less.
Every dose on a label is per 10,000 gallons. Write your number down. The salt, shock and chlorine calculators here start from it.
How we work it out
A cubic foot of water is 7.48 gallons. We find the surface area, multiply by the average depth, then turn cubic feet into gallons.
rectangle: length × width × average depth × 7.48
round: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × depth × 7.48
oval: π ÷ 4 × length × width × average depth × 7.48
average depth = (shallow end + deep end) ÷ 2
Pool charts use 5.9 for round and oval pools. That's just π ÷ 4 × 7.48 rounded off, so our number comes out a hair lower. Measure water depth, not wall height.
