volume = 8 × 4 ft × 16 in ÷ 12 = 42.7 cu ft

cords = 42.7 ÷ 128 = 0.33

face cord = 4 × 8 ft × 16 in ÷ 12 = 42.7 cu ft

Face cord

A face cord is a 4 × 8 ft stack, one log deep. With 16 in logs, that's 33.3% of a full cord. Ask the seller for cubic feet or full cords.

Stacked

Measure a tight stack. Thrown loose in a truck bed, the same wood takes up a lot more room.

How we work it out

A cord is 128 cubic feet of stacked wood, exactly: a stack 4 ft high, 4 ft deep and 8 ft long.

cords = length ft × height ft × log length in ÷ 12 ÷ 128

A face cord is a 4 × 8 ft stack only one log deep, so how much wood it is depends on the log length. With 16 in logs, three face cords make a cord. When a seller quotes face cords, ask for the log length, or for full cords.
