What will it cost?600 sq ft of artificial turf, DIY or installed.

strips = ⌈30 ft ÷ 15 ft⌉ = 2, each 20 ft

infill = 600 sq ft × 2.5–3.5 lb = 1,500–2,100 lb

base = 600 sq ft ÷ 100 = 6 tons (SYNLawn, 3 in)

Strips run the same direction so the grain matches. Leftover width is offcut you can use elsewhere.

Order a little extra

SYNLawn encourages ordering 10 to 20% extra on top of the layout, for trimming mistakes and repairs.

Grain one way

Every strip has to face the same way, or the seams show. SYNLawn: in a front yard, face the grain toward the street.

Infill sand

Use silica or coated infill sand. Never regular masonry sand (Home Depot guide). The Home Depot guide calls for 1 to 2 lb a sq ft, “more traffic = more infill”; Envirofill’s chart runs higher for longer pile.

How we work it out

Turf comes in rolls, most 15 ft wide, and the strips all have to run the same direction so the grain matches. So we lay strips side by side and pick the direction that wastes the least. SYNLawn encourages ordering 10 to 20% extra on top of that.

strips = width ÷ 15 ft, rounded up · seams = strips − 1

Infill depends on the pile height. Envirofill's chart goes from 1.5 to 2 lb a sq ft for ½ in pile up to 3.5 to 4.5 lb for 2 in pile; the Home Depot guide says 1 to 2 lb of silica sand, more for more traffic. Never use masonry sand.

base rock: sq ft ÷ 100 = tons at 3 in, sq ft ÷ 80 at 4 in (SYNLawn)

Nail the edges and both sides of each seam every 8 to 12 in, or 4 to 6 in if dogs will use it (SYNLawn). Base depth and compaction vary between makers (2 to 4 in, 80 to 95% compaction), so follow the instructions for the turf you buy.
