How much does a pallet of sod cover?
Pallet sizes vary farm to farm. Ask yours how many square feet they stack.
Short answer
Most pallets cover 400, 450 or 500 sq ft. Some farms go up to 700. A standard slab is 16 by 24 in, which is 2.66 sq ft, so a 450 sq ft pallet holds about 169 slabs.
Pallets per lawn
| Lawn | 400 sq ft pallet | 450 sq ft pallet | 500 sq ft pallet |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| 1,000 sq ft | 3 | 3 | 2 |
| 2,500 sq ft | 7 | 6 | 5 |
| 5,000 sq ft | 13 | 12 | 10 |
Rounded up to whole pallets, no extra added. Odd shapes and curves eat sod, so order a little over.
How heavy is a pallet?
1,500 to 3,000 lb, and up to half again more if it's soaked. That's why sod comes on a truck with a forklift. A heavy pallet outweighs what any half-ton pickup is rated to carry.
Lay it fast
Sod stacked on a pallet heats up and dries out. Have the ground prepped before it shows up, and lay it the day it comes.
